Tamela Mann, the powerhouse gospel singer, actress, and songwriter, has returned with her sixth solo studio album, Live Breathe Fight, which dropped on October 11. Known for her record-breaking achievements and heartfelt artistry, Mann is once again pushing boundaries, blending genres, and inspiring fans around the world.
Her lead single, “Working for Me,” not only showcases her signature gospel roots but also hints at her versatility, dipping into country influences. Earlier this year, the track earned Mann her record-breaking 11th No. 1 single on Gospel Airplay, cementing her as a dominant force in gospel music and breaking a tie with longtime collaborator and friend Kirk Franklin. In a heartfelt conversation, Mann opens up about her creative journey, faith, and the lessons she’s learned over three decades in the entertainment industry.
Blending Gospel and Country with “Working for Me”
“Working for Me” isn’t Mann’s first foray into country music. She recalls experimenting with the genre on “Mason Jar” from her 2018 album Us Against the World. But the decision to embrace country influences again didn’t come without hesitation.
“When my producer Phillip Bryant brought me the song, I was nervous,” Mann admits. “People often put me in a box of just doing ballads, but I stepped out on faith and trusted my heart. The chorus, ‘I can’t see it, but I still believe,’ really resonated with me. It’s a message for everyone — Christians and non-believers alike — about trusting that God is working for us even when we can’t see it.”
The track, with its blend of banjo-driven country and traditional gospel elements, surprised many listeners but was met with overwhelming praise. “It’s country, but we still take it to church,” Mann says. “It gives people something to sing along with, which I love.”
Breaking Records with Kirk Franklin
Achieving her 11th No. 1 single on Gospel Airplay was a moment of gratitude for Mann, who shares a long history with Kirk Franklin. The two met as teenagers and have remained close friends and collaborators ever since.
“It’s amazing to me that we’re both still here, giving God glory and spreading the good news,” Mann says. “There’s no competition between us — we’re just proud of each other. I thank God for our friendship and the journey we’ve been on together.”
Advice for Young Gospel Artists
With decades of experience under her belt, Mann is a source of wisdom for up-and-coming gospel artists. Her advice? Stay grounded in faith and embrace life’s imperfections.
“You’re not going to be perfect. You’ll make mistakes and face challenges, but keep loving the Lord,” she encourages. “My mother always told me to love God with all my heart, and He’ll take you far. I’ve prayed for longevity in this industry, and I believe it’s a blessing to still be here, inspired by legends like Shirley Caesar and The Clark Sisters.”
The Journey Behind Live Breathe Fight
Creating Live Breathe Fight was a deeply personal experience for Mann. Work began in March, and within three weeks, she and her team had crafted 17 songs.
“We had different rooms working simultaneously — one for vocals, one for tracks, and another for writing,” Mann explains. “This time, I stepped in more than ever before. Life was really ‘life-ing,’ as y’all say. There was disappointment and chaos, but I used those feelings to fuel my music. I refused to quit.”
The album’s title reflects Mann’s focus on faith and perseverance. “We’re living like heaven is our destiny, breathing with purpose, and fighting for victory,” she says. “I want this album to encourage people to grow together, love more, and judge less.”
Standout Tracks
When asked to pick three songs that define the album, Mann names “Working for Me,” “Hand on Me,” and “Deserve to Win.”
“These songs are about faith, resilience, and believing in God’s plan,” she explains. “‘Deserve to Win’ reminds us that after all we’ve been through, we deserve happiness and victory. It’s about stepping into the blessings God has for us.”
A Hands-On Approach
Mann’s hands-on involvement in the album marked a new chapter in her career. She poured her emotions into the songwriting process, beginning each session with prayer and allowing her faith to guide the music.
“The lyrics came first this time. I shared what they meant to me, and the writers built on that,” Mann says.
One of the most challenging tracks to record was “Carry On,” which introduced modern cadences that pushed her vocal abilities. “My producers stretched me, but I took it as a challenge,” she says. “I want people to hear the growth in my music from when I started in 2004 until now.”
Looking Ahead
While Live Breathe Fight is a solo project, Mann hints at plans to collaborate with other artists in the future. “I want to bring in some surprises,” she says.
Reflecting on her career, Mann expresses gratitude for the journey so far. “Life hasn’t always been easy, but I’ve never let disappointment consume me,” she says. “I’ve used every challenge as fuel to keep going, and I hope this album inspires others to do the same.”
With Live Breathe Fight, Tamela Mann reaffirms her place as a leading voice in gospel music, blending genres, pushing creative boundaries, and sharing messages of hope and faith with audiences everywhere.
